We got a surf lesson as a present for our wedding. We drove to San Diego to get a lesson at Pacific Beach. This location is awesome and you should not miss out on breakfast or coffee at Woody’s located nearby!
Adam was a great teacher and we both ended up riding lot’s of waves. You get a thorough but not too long introduction and then you get to hit the waves with your instructor by your side. This was so much fun and it definitely won’t be the last time we go surfing in California.
I would recommend this experience to anyone going to California!CasperH
I’ve only tried surfing once before and I have wanted to try it again ever since. So I decided to take a lesson with Pacific Surf. It was wonderful. My instructor Trevor was really nice and positive, he was awesome to learn from and after about an 1 in the water I had stood up a couple of times.Katja_L_S
After living in San Diego for a year I decided that I should give surfing a try. After looking at several websites I decided upon Pacific Surf School. I booked the weekend package online, which included lessons (1.5 hrs) both days and unlimited use of the board afterwards. I originally booked my lesson for 0900 on Saturday, but upon calling 24hrs in advance learned that I had been bumped to 1100. The shop is co-located with a little bakery…which has most excellent pastries. Parking is hard to find, so show up a good 30-45 minutes early unless you want to pay. On Saturday I was in a semi private group (3 of us) with Kevin. He was an outstanding instructor with over 17 years of experience and a whole lot of enthusiasm about the sport. I am uncoordinated and lack balance, but he managed to get me standing on the board several times. By the end of the session I was beat and didn’t even bother taking the board out for the rest of the afternoon. I had my lesson Sunday morning at 0900 (a better time that 1100 as there are a lot less people on the beach). My instructor was Tyler. He was an awesome instructor…probably young enough to be my son, but extremely professional. His enthusiasm and positive attitude kept me going even after several spills off the board. By the end of the session I actually looked like I had been surfing for longer than just two days. Scheduling problems aside, my experience with Pacific Surf was very positive (In fact, I booked a private lesson for my wife next week) due to the exceptional instruction of both Kevin and Tyler.Hoops_78
My instructor Tim made it worth my time and money. Great instructor, really got to know you one on one and got right up on the board the second try. Private lessons I would reccommend if it’s your first time especially ask for Tim. Looking around I saw alot of people nose diving but he really gives you the enthusiasm to keep going and really get you on your board as if your pro. So glad to get the experience and it was a great treat before leaving San Diego. Thanks Tim!gaahhbeee
This was our families first trip to the Pacific Ocean and giving surfing a try was on the list of things we wanted to do while in California. Based on the reviews here on TripAdvisor we decided to try Pacific Surf School and we were not disappointed. Our instructor Alex did a great job with all three of our boys (ages 9, 13, 16) and all of them were able to stand and ride a few waves in by the end of the lesson. Our trip included Disneyland, Sea World, Universal, and Sea Kayaking but when asked about the vacation the surfing experience was number one for all three of the kids. Great job Pacific Surf School!Steve H
Needless to say, our daughter Lauren, 10, had an amazing time with Alex, her surf instructor. We booked her for 3 private lessons with Alex and were totally thrilled. Alex is great with kids and he was kind, patient, and loads of fun. He had my daughter surfing, doing handstands and they even did a tandem surf with her on his shoulders. Alex is super cool and great for kids!!! I definitely recommend Pacific Surf–this is our third summer here and have never been disappointed for a second. Also, get the picture package–I never got it previously, but this year said what the heck and the pics are nothing like mine, they are gorgeous and professional!mjwarner
My partner and I had a terrific day at Mission Beach with Adam and company. The school was well organized and flexible in scheduling (which was really handy) – many thanks to Marlee for being so cool!
We would definitely go back!Daniel_Ryan6
Me and my boyfriend had a lesson with Eric. Payed $65 each for a semi private lesson. We started with the basic in the sand before we hit the water. Eric was attentive and explained things well. He also saw our different needs and helped us on our own level. Had a great time in the waves. Both of us was able to stand up on the board. We were exhausted at the end, but it was very worth it 🙂 Kate took pictures of us while we where surfing, which we were able to buy for $50 afterwards. A bit pricy for the pictures, but we felt we had to have them as documentation for our adventure 🙂Kristine F
Took a lesson this week with Kevin and Eric from Pacific Surf School and they were excellent. They explained everything clearly, answered every question, and were just great to hang with during the lesson.
They made getting your butt kicked by Mother Nature a great experience.
And everyone I dealt with over the phone was helpful and great to work with.
Highly recommend them to anyone looking for a surfing lesson.
I recently booked a trip to San Diego with one of the sole reasons being that I wanted to learn how to surf. I didn’t really know what to expect but the experience exceeded any expectations I could have had. My private instructor, Erik, was fantastic! Kevin was another instructor there when I had my lessons and was great as well. I had never surfed before, nor really been in the ocean all that much, and the instructors make sure to help you through every step of the process including: beach instructions, helping get you/your board out to where you need to be, telling you when to paddle/get up and giving a little extra push with the wave if needed. They are incredibly encouraging (high fives all around when you catch a wave) and genuinely want you to enjoy your surfing adventure. By the end of my three days I was riding the open face waves and I’m hoping this was just the first of many future surfing trips. There is also ample free (and no time limit) parking just one block off the beach which makes getting to and from your lessons super easy.Amanda G
We had a great experience with Pacific Surf School.
Initially, we missed our lesson because we remembered the time incorrectly and showed up late. They apologetically explained that we could not get a refund because their policy is no refunds for missed lessons. I knew this was this policy as it was very clear at time of payment, so we expressed our disappointment and thanked them anyway.
However, the real bonus came about 5 minutes later when the gentleman called back and told us that he felt bad we were going to miss our lesson and offered to let us take another one a little later for a very steeply discounted additional fee. We happily agreed, thanked him, and went for it.
We then had a great lesson with Lindsey, both my wife and I got up several times though we had never surfed before, and it was just a blast. They even let us keep using the boards and wetsuits for a while after until we got so tired we were ready to call it quits. In short, I feel like I got great customer service and they were very kind about a mistake that wasn’t even their fault. We’ll certainly go back next time we go to surf.
My cousin and I were instructed by Adam. He was super personable & explained techniques several different ways getting the same message across to us. This lesson totally clicked for me, after several instructions in Costa Rica & California, this experience was by far the best i’ve had, it is what worked for me and I was able to get up on the board & ride the waves several times! My cousin got up several times as well, it was her first time ever taking lessons!
Adam also made my 3.5 year old daughter feel included by letting her practice on the beach next to us while on her boogie board. Totally recommend Adam & Pacific Surf School!
We happened upon Pacific Surf School while pitching up on the beach this afternoon with friends visiting from Australia. We had 4 children in total who were all really keen to learn to surf and Raquel was super helpful arranging a lesson for us the same afternoon! The instructor was really patient and the kids were all standing up on their boards by the end of the lesson. My two children have now asked to take surf camp this summer and we’ll definitely be back for more lessons when my extended family comes to visit!

Pacific Surf School was very flexible in rescheduling our lesson. Fernando was a patient, helpful and fun instructor. Our 14 and 10 year old beginner surfers learned a lot and were able to surf very quickly. They both said it was one of the best experiences of our week long trip to California!

We (2 13 year olds, a 16 and 17 year old) participated in the 3 day camp from 9-12:30 and it was amazing. Our instructors were Antoine and Mike, who were very enjoyable to be around and super enthusiastic about their jobs as well. We learned a lot and all want to come back ASAP!
