Why Surfing Can Be a Good Sport for Seniors

Do not waste the precious years of your life doing nothing. You’re never too old to learn a new skill and impress those around you.

Surfing is assumed to be ideal for youngsters but a growing number of seniors are now opting for it given its many benefits.

Many health regulatory bodies now encourage the older population to develop an attitude of “I can do anything”. However, elderly surfing should be done strictly under the supervision of a qualified or certified trainer at Pacific Surf.

While it is beneficial, we cannot neglect the risks associated with it. Hence, we suggest that you first get in touch with your physician and ask if you can opt for surfing before you give it a try.

If you’re not motivated enough, then look at some of the benefits seniors can enjoy surfing:

Soothing Effect

This may come as a surprise to some but surfing can help people relax and make them feel more energetic. The sea might be loud and strong but the waves can have a soothing effect on the mind.

Surfing will bring the missing zing to your life and allow you to add a new layer to your personality.

Opportunity to Socialize

Since there is no age for surfing, there are a great amount of surfers over 60. Seniors can socialize with fellow surfer devotees and make new friends. This is important because humans are social animals. We need people to talk to and spend time with, especially as we grow older.

A Great Workout

Believe it or not, Surfing is a full body workout. It exercises all the muscles and makes you stronger. Plus, it is also a good cardiovascular workout and can help burn four hundred calories an hour. However, you do not have to spend an hour surfing if your body does not allow you to.

Surfing can provide multiple physical benefits because it strengthens all major muscles, balances out some hormonal imbalances, improves balance and focus.

It is also said to be good for the health and can help control a number of health problems including diabetes, arthritis, mobility issues and high blood pressure. However, make sure to consult an expert before you give it a try.

We have people from all ages and places having lessons with us daily! If you are around San Diego come have surf lessons with us and give it a try! We look forward to surfing with you.
