Popoyo is in the north or the Nicaraguan region of Tola, and is a surf mecca, calling both beginner and advanced surfers to its mellow inner reef breaks and epic outer reef breaks alike. It also charms beginner surfers with the popular and sheltered Beginner’s Bay, just a little way south. South of Beginners bay, surfers seek out Playa Santana, a long beach with multiple reef breaks and a lot of variety.
Hacienda Iguana is the home of Playa Colorado which boasts epic barrels during peak season as well as year-round satisfaction at Panga Drops with its deep-water swell. Further south at San Juan Del Sur, the coves and beaches seem endless, each offering something delightfully different at either Playa Maderas, Playa Hermosa, Playa Remanso or Playa Yankee. One thing is for sure- with all of the variety and nearly year-long off shore breezes, you are bound to have the surf experience of a lifetime!

Awesome group activity! - Will, Aidan and Jack were INCREDIBLE. We had a large group - 13 people, ranging in age from 10-50. These guys made sure each participant got individual attention with great... Read More positivity, support and guidance. They were clear in their instructions and their love of the sport was totally infectious. The photographer did a great job of capturing the event too - we bought the package and appreciate the effort he went through to capture great shots of every member of our group.

Great even for a more experienced surfer! - Highly recommend Pacific Surf School! They're one of the very few places that offer more than just beginner lessons. I took four solo lessons on the "outside" with Jack, and... Read More I progressed more than I had in four years on my own.
I also had the opportunity to watch other instructors with younger kids, families, and adults. They were so supportive, encouraging, and professional. It's awesome to see instructors get so excited for their students' successes!
The office and the beach site are both easy to find. Parking isn't bad in the mornings, but do allow 30 minutes just in case. The surfboards and wetsuits are all well maintained and good quality.
As a solo traveler it was nice having the school's photographer snap pics. I did not pay for the photo package ahead of time, instead I just bought the pics from my final session afterwards in the office. I do recommend booking the photo package if pics are important to you.
I would definitely return to Pacific Surf School and recommend it for both total newbies and beginner-intermediate surfers of all ages.
